Lincoln's Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 7¾x9¾. Washington, 1864 March 1. To
Commodore Joshua R. Sands, Sacketts Harbor, N.Y. In full: "In reply to
your letter of the 19th Inst. the Department informing you that it will not be
necessary for you to remain at Sackett's Harbor. Authority has been asked of
Congress to sell Lot No 13. When that permission has been obtained, your
personal attention will be needed." Joshua Sands served as lighthouse
inspector on Lakes Erie and Ontario and the St. Lawrence River (1862-1866) and
as Port-Admiral at Norfolk, Va. (1869-1872). Promoted to Commodore in 1862, he
became Rear Admiral in 1866. Welles served as Secretary of the Navy in
the Lincoln and Johnson administrations, 1861-1869. Lightly creased.
Nailhead-size stain at lower blank right margin. Fine condition.
