6. To Commodore Joshua R. Sands, U.S. Navy, Stratford, Conn. In full:
"Enclosed herewith are charges against Thomas Hare and Richard Boyd, seamen,
George Harris and George Holleyman, ordinary seamen, and Thomas Carney,
landsman, who will be tried by the Naval General Court Martial ordered to
convene at the Navy Yard Charlestown, Mass. on the 14th instant." Enclosure
not present. Welles served as Lincoln and Johnson's only Secretary of the Navy,
1861-1869. Creased. Folds, not at signature. Lightly shaded at upper blank
margin, which is also nicked. Tackhead-size stain at lower right blank corner.
