Notifying a Commodore of the date of a Naval Court of Inquiry.
Manuscript LS: "Gideon Welles" as Lincoln's Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 7¾x9¾. Navy Department, 1861 October 19. To Commodore Joshua R. Sands, U.S. Navy, Binghamton, N.Y. In full: "A Naval Court of Inquiry, of which you are appointed a member, is ordered to convene in the City of Washington, on Friday the 25th inst., at which time and place you will appear and report yourself to the President of the Court." ANS across bottom: "Reported 25th October 1861 - W.B. Sherbride/President". JOSHUA R. SANDS (1795-1883), a veteran of the War of 1812 and the Mexican War, was flag-officer in command of the Brazil station from 1859-1861. He retired on December 21, 1861, two months after this letter was written to him. Sands was officially commissioned Commodore on July 16, 1862 and was promoted to Rear Admiral on July 25, 1866. GIDEON WELLES served as Secretary of the Navy through both the Lincoln and Johnson administrations (1861-1869). Folds, horizontal fold touches signature. Light show through from docket on verso at upper margin. Top edges folded down. Lightly creased. Overall, fine condition.
