Secretary of the Navy accepts the resignation of a Master's Mate on a ship in
Rear Admiral Porter's Mississippi Squadron.
Partly Printed LS: "Gideon Welles" as Lincoln's Secretary of the
Navy, 1p, 8x9¾. Navy Department, 1863 September 22. To Mr. J.W.
Meacham, late acting Master's Mate, U.S.S. Clara Dolsen, Mississippi
Squadron (R.A. Porter). In full: "Your resignation as an acting
Master's Mate in the Navy of the United States, on temporary service, tendered
in your letter of the 15th Inst, is hereby accepted."
Welles served as Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson
from 1861-1869. In July 1863, David D. Porter was promoted to Rear Admiral.
On August 1, 1863, he took command of all Union naval forces on the Mississippi
River and displayed his administrative abilities by organizing a naval command
that included 3000 miles of river, over 80 ships and a major navy yard. Lightly
creased. Pencil notations re the ship (unknown hand). Fine condition.
