GIL CLANCY
The legendary boxing manager and trainer poses with his first world
champion.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Good luck John/Gil Clancy". B/w,
8½x11 overall, image 7½x6 (one surface). Names of subjects in the photograph
(Gil Clancy, Emile Griffith and Howie Albert, who helped Clancy in the training
and managing of Griffith) written in ink (unknown hand) beneath image. Gil
Clancy, one of boxing's greatest managers and trainers, had his first
world champion with Emile Griffith, who captured the welterweight and middle
weight crowns. Clancy stayed with Griffith over his entire 20-year career (and
he played himself in the 2005 film, The Emile Griffith Story), but he
also worked with other fighters, including Rodrigo Valdes and Juan
LaPorte, whom he personally tutored, as well as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier,
George Foreman, Ken Buchanan, Jerry Quarry and Gerry Cooney. Clancy came
out of retirement in the 1990s to work with Oscar De La Hoya. Named
matchmaker for Madison Square Garden Boxing in 1978, he held that
position for three years before turning to broadcasting and becoming one of
boxing's premiere television analysts in the 1980s and 1990s. Named
Manager of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America in 1967
and 1973, Clancy has also been honored with the Sam Taub Award for Excellence
in Broadcasting Journalism and he is enshrined in the International
Boxing Hall of Fame. Slightly creased at blank margins, else fine
condition.
