GILBERT FRANKAU. Typed Letter signed: "Gilbert Frankau", 1p, 7¾x9¾.
London, 1927 December 10. Affixed to blank lower margin are a magazine photo of Frankau
(b/w, 2½x3) and a clipping referencing the poem "Horatius." On letterhead of the May Fair
Hotel to Hugo Mackay, the Hague (Netherlands). In full: "I was very interested in yours of
December 3rd and am appending the autograph for which you ask to this letter. You are
quite right about 'Horatius'. The verse in question was never writen by Macaulay but by a
member of my own family. We used to put it in for dramatic effect. Very sincerely
yours".Gilbert Frankau (1884-1952) was a British author of numerous poems, novels
and short stories. Many of his poems and other works drew on his experience as a
veteran of trench warfare in France during World War I. (He was involved in the horrific
battles of Ypres and the Somme and later invalided out for shell shock.) His mother Julia,
writing as Frank Danby, and his daughter, Pamela Frankau, were also successful writers. Lightly
creased and soiled. Mounting tape remnants in upper left corner. Tear at right edge mid-crease.
One-half inch tear at lower right edge.
