GILBERT GROSVENOR
The author and editor best known for helming "National Geographic Magazine" signs an appointment to the Washington Conference Committee at the 13th Annual Meeting of the American Child Hygiene Association.
Partly Printed DS: "Gilbert Grosvenor" as Chairman, 7¾x5½ card. Washington, D.C., no date, but circa 1922. On card of the American Child Hygiene Association to "Dr. J. M. Hull" (name written in unknown hand). In full: "I have the honor to inform you that you have been appointed a member of the Washington Conference Committee for the Thirteenth Annual Meeting of the American Child Hygiene Association which will convene at Continental Hall on October 12, 1922, the Honorable Herbert Hoover presiding. The favor of a reply will be appreciated." Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor (1875-1966) is best known for being the editor of the "National Geographic Magazine" (1903-1954) as well as serving as Director (1903-1919) and President (1920-1954) of the National Geographic Society. Married to Elsie Bell, the daughter of Alexander Graham Bell, he was first tapped by Bell to serve as an editorial assistant. A writer and geographer, Grosvenor increased the magazine's circulation by using colored photographs, and Society membership grew from 900 to over two million under his leadership. Grosvenor, an early leader in the areas of conservation and wildlife, also wrote a history of the Society as well as a number of other books. At the time of this letter, HERBERT HOOVER was Secretary of Commerce under President Warren G. Harding (he would serve from 1921-1928, continuing in the post under Harding's successor, Calvin Coolidge). During his tenure, Hoover became President of the American Child Health Organization, and he would raise private funds to promote health education in schools and communities. Lightly creased at upper portion. Soiled at blank margins, light rust stains at lower margin. Overall, fine condition.
