Yatscombe, Boar's Hill, Oxford, 1930 August 1. On embossed sheet to
"Dear Mr Dawson". In full: "May I introduce Mr Harwood, who
wants some help for an educational scheme in Germany on which I think your name
would be more useful to him than mine. I am fairly sure that you will be in
sympathy. Yours sincerely". At the time of this letter, Murray was
Chairman of the League of Nations Union (1923-1938). In 1930, he also published
The Ordeal of This Generation: The War, the League and the Future, taken
from his 1928 Halley Stewart lectures, and a translation of The Suppliant
Women. Australian-born British classical scholar and diplomat George
Gilbert Aimé Murray (1866-1957) is best known for his Greek translations
and for his commitment to the cause of world peace. Murray, who was a
Professor of Greek at the University of Glasgow from 1889-1899, became
Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford in 1908. The first of his many
translations, Andromache, was published in 1900, and Murray's last
translation, The Knights, was published in 1956. He also wrote a
number of classical studies as well as a novel, a play and numerous
pamphlets. In addition to serving in his League of Nations Union position,
Murray was the first President of the General Council of the United Nations
Association. He wrote several books on international policy,
including Liberality and Civilization (1938). Murray refused a knighthood
in 1912. Lightly creased with fold, mid-vertical fold at the "b" of Gilbert.
½-inch tar at lower right blank edge. Lightly soiled at blank margins, light
rust stain at lower left margin. Overall, fine condition.
