This typed letter, signed by actor Gilbert Roland, is stapled to a
manila folder containing 21 unsigned photos, most of Roland. According to the
letter, "These are some of the types of costumes destroyed by the fire."
Typed letter signed "Gilbert Roland". 1 page, 8¼x5¼, stapled
to the back of an 8¼x10½ personalized manila envelope. In full: "Dear
Miss C; These are some of the types of costumes destroyed by the fire. Notice
the 'poncho' in the scene by the camp fire. It was bought in Mexico for this
special purpose. Also notice the beautiful girls. Sincerely". Lightly toned and
creased. Envelope is torn open at right edge and top left and bottom right
corners. Envelope was neatly opened at top edge with staples on front near flap.
Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: 21unsignedb/w photos, most 10x8. These photos are mostly unidentified but include 8
western movie stills, 1 from MGM's Apache War Smoke (1952) and the rest
unidentified. They also include 4 publicity photos of Roland from Helen Ferguson
Public Relations in Beverly Hills, California; 6 baby photos, possibly of
Roland's two children by first wife Constance Bennett; 1 photo of Roland in
costume and on the set of a western movie; and 2 identical photos of an
unidentified painting. Lightly toned, cracked creased and bowed. Light
impressions and scratches on images of some photos. Binder holes along one edge
of some photos. Developing and negative errors in some photos. Missing bottom
right corner on Apache War Smoke still. Photos of painting are discolored
at edges. Otherwise in fine condition. In a movie career of more than half a
century (1925-1982), Roland (1905-1994, born Luis Antonio Dámaso de
Alonso in Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico) played dashing leading men in both
silent and talking films. Originally trained as a bullfighter, he was the
only genuine Mexican to portray the Cisco Kid on screen (in eleven
films). Roland received two Golden Globe nominations as Best Supporting
Actor for The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) and Cheyenne Autumn
(1964).
