GILBERT THOMAS. ALS: "Gilbert Thomas.", 2p, 7x9, front and verso. Flatford, Meadway, Gidea Park, Essex, 1934 June 14. On imprinted letterhead to "My dear Charlie". In full: "I was glad to hear from you again after a long silence. We have often spoken of you and hoped you were well and flourishing again. I can understand how busy you have been, and must warmly congratulate you on your success in the Election. I wish there were more men like you on Parliament and on our Councils. Things would not be in such a state as they are. I am also interested to hear about your Rest House - a very beautiful thought carried into action. Unfortunately we have just had a big 'turn-out' and I fear that at the moment we have nothing to send. But I will be on you = mind. I think you and Oliver Holmes have done splendidly. We are all well. All now includes a little daughter - aged 4½ months. She is a dear soul - most contented and happy. We are, of course, much delighted, and David is very proud of his sister, whom we have called Ruth Isabella - the latter name after my mother. We are so sorry to hear about 'Joy'. A sweeter little dog I never saw. I am writing my longest book, which I hardly expect to [illegible] before the end of the year. It is on 'William Cowper and the Eighteenth Century - incidentally with applications to to-day! Ian Nicholson and Watson have arranged to publish the book, which I am much enjoying writing. I have also had a little flowering of verse, and continue a fair amount of reviewing: so that altogether I am very busy these days. My wife and David join in kindest greetings. Give mine to all the Wellington friends." Thomas' biography, William Cowper and the Eighteenth Century, was published in 1935. The works of English author Gilbert Oliver Thomas (1891-1978) also include poems such as "The Unseen Bridge", essays and biographies. Folds, not at signature. Ink smudged on year of date, show through of ink. Lightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
