GILLIAN ARMSTRONG
The Australian film director signs an FDC honoring the Barrymore's
First Day Cover signed: "Gillian Armstrong", 6½x3½. FDC honoring the Barrymore's, postmarked New York, New York, June 8, 1982, 20-cent stamp affixed, 2½x3½ photograph affixed at face, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Australian film director Gillian Armstrong (b. 1950) received offers from Hollywood studios after the success of My Brilliant Career (1979), but preferred to remain in her native country. Armstrong's films, often period pieces, feature strong female characters. She has also helped boost lesser known actors like Sam Neill and Cate Blanchett to stardom. Among her most successful films have been Mrs. Soffel (1984), The Last Days of Chez Nouz (1992) and Charlotte Gray (2001). Another film series, called "the Up series", follows the same group of girls at four year intervals, beginning with Fourteen's Good and Eighteen's Better. Her most recent film, Love, Lust and Lies (2009), won the Australian Directors Guild Award, and she holds many other institute and festival awards. Fine condition.
