GIORGIO STREHLER
The famed Italian dramatist and director poses mid-acting in 3¾x5½ photo, signs his name in red
Photograph signed: "Giorgio Strehler" in red crayon. B/w, 3¾x5½. Giorgio Strehler (1921-1997) was an Italian opera and theatre director. Strehler grew up believing theatre to be "false", thinking that it did not have the power to stir one's emotions as film did; but his mind was changed after accidently walking into a performance of Carol Goldoni's Una delle ultime sere di Carnevale being performed by a Venetian company, and decided from then on that he would study theatre. He went to school at the Accademia del Filidrammatici before going into exile during the Second World War; it was in Switzerland that he prospered as a director of the Compagnie des Masques, famously directing the world premiere of Albert Camus' Caligula. Strehler continued his career for many decades in opera, Shakespeare, and drama in venues across Europe; he was awarded the Legion d'honneur by the French government and was named the director of the "Union of the Theatres of Europe in Paris in 1985. Furthermore he served as the President of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 1982, and in 1990 was the recipient of the Europe Theatre Prize. Corners rounded. Light surface creases. Pencil notes on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
