GISBERT L. BOSSARD
The photographer known for his controversial Mormon Temple photographs signs his name on a letter
Typed letter signed:"Gisbert L. Bossard", in black ink. 8x11 sheet.Dayton, Ohio, June 14, 1932.On Telechime General Kontrolar Company, Inc. letterhead to"Dear Mr. Meadows:-" in full: "Upon my return to the office, my secretary showed me your letter of June 2nd, in which you advised that you were obtaining signatures for a contest sponsored by the Waterman Fountain Pen and Pencil Co. of New York. I am very happy to assist you in this, and am attaching a second letter head(not included) hereto on which I have affixed my signature. As you undoubtedly will want to know a little of the history and background of the people from whom you are getting these signatures, I am pleased to enclose a clipping from Sunday's Journal (not included), and if you desire any further data, would refer you to the latest issue of Americana. With best wishes for your success. Sincerely yours". Gisbert L. Bossard (1890-1975), born in Germany, immigrated to the United States at the age of 16, as a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. In his younger years he was an inventor. Inventing such things as the chimes doorbell, which afforded him retirement in his early 20's. After that he became an avid photographer, which he pursued for the rest of his life. He is best known for pictures he took of the Salt Lake Valley (Downtown Salt Lake City today) and inside the Salt Lake LDS Temple. The temple pictures created a scandal after they were published in the Salt Lake Tribune and then sold to the New York Times in 1911. Although there was an uproar over the Temple pictures in 1911, they are appreciated today as being a part of Salt Lake's History. Toned, Normal mailing folds. Worn left margin. Two 4x 2½ inch pieces cut out from bottom right and bottom left corners (not affecting signature). Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
