GIULIETTA FRUGONI SIMIONATO
B/w picture post card of opera singer Giulietta Frugoni Simionato in costume, signed and dated in 1964. Simionato was Italy's foremost mezzo-soprano from the 1950s until her retirement in 1966.
Picture post card signed "Giulietta Simionato/1964" in blue ink. Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. B/w, 3½x5¼ overall, 3½x4¾ image, one surface. Photo by Fayer. Italian opera singer Simionato (1910-2010) was Italy's leading mezzo-soprano from the 1950s until her retirement in 1966. A versatile and admired singer, she proved equally adept at the big dramatic mezzo roles of Verdi and the coloratura roles of Rossini, Bellini and Verdi as well as lyric comic and verismo roles. Simionato made her debut at 18 as Lola in Domenico Monleone's Cavalleria rusticana, but she wasn't "discovered" as Teatro alla Scala until 1947... even though she'd sung there for 11 years, won a voice competition in 1933 against 384 other contestants and had rave reviews in Switzerland with Marisa Morel. Simionato was widely recorded and performed around the world, with a 1953 debut at Covent Garden and a 1959 debut at the Metropolitan Opera. Simionato died exactly a week from her hundredth birthday. Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Lightly rounded and worn corners with lightly creased top left corner. Otherwise in fine condition.
