Autograph letter signed: "Mrs. Sterling North" in blue ink. 1 page, 8½x11. Written on Sterling North's personal letterhead. Morristown, New Jersey. In full: "Dear Mr. Pruett, I'm sorry to tell you my husband is quite ill and has been in the hospital for some time. You will probably find this enclosure interesting. I am also sending an autographed copy of an end paper of "Raccoons are the Brightest People". Thank you for writing -". Written above a typed letter unsigned by her husband, Sterling North in part: "The Walt Disney film based on my best-seller RASCAL, and the publication of my most recent book THE WOLFLING have brought in so many fan letters that I have found it all but impossible to answer my mail. But the following autobiographical information will probably answer most of your questions". GLADYS NORTH (1908-1989) was the wife of popular children's book author Sterling North, and often helped her husband as a co-author, editor and researcher. Thomas Sterling North (1906-1974) was an American author best known for his children's books. After attending the University of Chicago, he began his writing career as a reporter at the Chicago Daily News, the New York World-Telegram and then the New York Sun - then going free-lance. Early successes include Midnight and Jeremiah was made into the Disney movie So Dear to my Heart (1949), Able Lincoln: Log Cabin to White House, Raccoons are the Brightest People, and Hurry Spring. Published in 1963, Rascal, his most famous work, received a Newbery Honor 1964, Sequoyah Book Award in 1966, A Young Reader's Choice Award 1966, and was made into a Disney movie in 1969. In addition, Rascal was made into a 52-eposode Japanese anime titled Araiguma Rasukaru (Racoon Rascal). Corners rounded. Lightly toned. Ink notes on verso in unknown hand. Light surface creases.
