GLADYS TABER
The novelist and magazine columnist who lived in Connecticut for much of her life signed
this handwritten letter
Autograph Letter Signed: “Gladys Taber” in blue ink on a 6x7 sheet. Two pages of text on one
sheet (double-sided). Adhered along left edge to a larger 8½x11½ sheet. Personal letterhead
indicates that the message is sent from Stillmeadow Farm, where Taber lived year-round
beginning in 1935, although she lived there off and on previously for decades. Dated October
4, 1968. Sent to Corrinne Manning. In Full: “I admire the lovely stationery - and I enjoyed
hearing from you. The recipe sounds delicious and I'll enjoy that too! I'm so glad you feel as I do
about Beverly Nichols. I have an Abyssinian kitten named Amber-Apricot under-coat ticked with
seal brown. So there will be a cat book when I get time to finish it. New England is splashed with
color now and beautiful. Have a happy October”. Gladys Taber (1899-1980) was a writer and
professor who published dozens of books. She was a regular columnist for the Ladies' Home
Journal and Family Circle for many years, later going on to teach writing at Columbia
University (1921-1926). Her many books include Stillmeadow Seasons (1950), The
Evergreen Tree (1937), The Family on Maple Street (1946), and Amber, A Very Personal
Cat (1970). Large sheet lightly toned around edges. Perforation marks on left edge of sheet.
