paragraphs of his novel Bless the Beasts and the Children, nominated for
the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction (1970). American author Glendon Swarthout
(1918-1992) returned from World War II to begin writing short stories,
carried in popular magazines like Cosmopolitan and Saturday Evening
Post. In 1958, he published his first novel, The Came to Cordura,
made into a feature film starring Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth the
following year. In all, six of Swarthout's books would become films, the
others being 7th Cavalry, Where the Boys Are, Bless the Beasts
and the Children, The Shootist and A Christmas to Remember.
Nominated twice for Pulitzers and once for an O. Henry, he earned two Silver
Spur Awards for Best Western Novel (The Shootist and The
Homesman), a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Western Writers of America
(1991), and posthumous induction into the Western Writers Hall of Fame. Fine
