GLENN FORD
Plaque thanking Ford for support of a charity gala for Alzheimer's research and bearing the phrase "for the love of Rita" (a reference to Rita Hayworth, afflicted with the illness). Accompanied by signed letter of provenance from Peter Ford, Glenn's only child.
Ephemera, unsigned. 6¾x10½ metallic plaque on 11¼x14¼ wooden base, imprinted as follows: "To/Glenn Ford/In appreciation of your/support for the/I. M. C. Charity Gala, Miami/To benefit/Alzheimer's Disease/and/Related Disorders/For the Love of Rita/February 23, 1985". Accompanied by a Letter of Provenance signed: "Peter Ford", Glenn Ford's son, in full: "This will serve as a "Letter of Provenance" noting that the below-listed lot was purchased at the Heritage Auctions sale titled "Entertainment & Music Memorabilia" on March 30, 2013. It was owned and/or used by my father, the actor Glenn Ford, and I consigned it directly to this auction". The letter bears an appealing photo of young Peter with his father dressed for a Western role. After making his screen debut in 20th Century-Fox's Heaven With a Barbed Wire Fence (1939), Glenn Ford (1916-2006) played diverse roles, including dark characters (The Blackboard Jungle and Ransom, both released in 1955), romantic leading men (Teahouse of the August Moon, 1956; The Gazebo, 1959) and rugged western heroes (The Desperados, 1943; The Sheepman, 1958; Cimarron, 1960). In 1958, Ford was voted the number one male box-office attraction, and remained popular long after the studio system that "created" him had collapsed. Later in his career, he appeared on television as well as appearing in feature films, including Superman: The Movie (1978). Ford served in the US Marine Corps during World War II, and also spent two tours of duty with the Third Marine Amphibious Force in Vietnam. He is the only actor to have served with both the US Special Forces and the French Foreign Legion. Peter Ford (b. 1945) was Glenn Ford's only child, the son of his first wife (1943-1959), dancer and actress Eleanor Powell. The Intermountain Medical Center is an elite medical research and treatment center based in Salt Lake City. Alzheimer's claimed the life of Rita Hayworth in 1987; Glenn Ford was pallbearer at her funeral. Ford had made several notable films with Hayworth, beginning with The Lady in Question (1940). Fine condition.
