Ephemera, unsigned. 6¾x10½ metallic plaque on 11x14 wooden base. Plaque headed with the scriptural Fifth Commandment, "Honor thy Father and thy Mother", bestowed on Glenn Ford by the Junior Auxiliary of the Jewish Home for the Aged, for his "many years of service to aged mothers and fathers" November 17, 1965. Accompanied by a copy of a Letter of Provenance from Peter Ford, Glenn Ford's son, bearing an appealing photo of young Peter with his father dressed for a Western role.After making his screen debut in 20th Century-Fox's Heaven With a Barbed Wire Fence (1939), Glenn Ford (1916-2006) played diverse roles, including dark characters (The Blackboard Jungle and Ransom, both released in 1955), romantic leading men (Teahouse of the August Moon, 1956; The Gazebo, 1959) and rugged western heroes (The Desperados, 1943; The Sheepman, 1958; Cimarron, 1960). In 1958, Ford was voted the number one male box-office attraction, and remained popular long after the studio system that "created" him had collapsed. Later in his career, he appeared on television as well as appearing in feature films, including Superman: The Movie (1978). Ford served in the US Marine Corps during World War II, and also spent two tours of duty with the Third Marine Amphibious Force in Vietnam. He is the only actor to have served with both the US Special Forces and the French Foreign Legion. Ford never won an Oscar, the result perhaps of his low-key "everyman" film persona, but he received many honors from philanthropic organizations whose causes he aided unstintingly.Peter Ford (b. 1945) was Glenn Ford's only child, the son of his first wife (1943-1959), dancer and actress Eleanor Powell.
