GLENN L. MARTIN
A personal letter regarding rumors surrounding his resignation from Wright-Martin Corporation--the aircraft manufacturing duo that lasted merely 10 months.
Typed letter signed: "Glenn L. Martin", 1p, 8½x11. Cleveland, Ohio, 1917 August 21. To Henry Woodhouse (publisher of "Flying" magazine), New York City. In part: "It is true...that I expect a company will be formed with $2,000,000. in cash, but in the absence of the facts I am not inclined to have anything published. It is not a fact as yet that my resignation has been accepted by The Wright-Martin Corporation, but the minute that it is I shall write you a long letter giving you all the details which you can use as you see fit...." ORVILLE WRIGHT and GLENN MARTIN decided to merge their companies and the Wright-Martin Aircraft Company was formed in September 1916. When the U.S. entered WWI on April 6, 1917, Wright-Martin was the only American company that was working on a usable airplane engine. The new company lasted only ten months. Martin moved his factory to Cleveland and reorganized as the Glenn L. Martin Company. Wright reorganized as Wright Aeronautical. Slightly creased at upper margin. Folds, vertical fold touches the second "n" in Glenn. Fine condition.
