GLORIA DeHAVEN and LEW SCHREIBER
The actress signed this contract with the Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation
Document Signed: "Gloria DeHaven" in ink. 1p, 7¼x4½. No place, no date. Carbon Partial. Bottom half of a contract between DeHaven andTwentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation. Also signed by a Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation representative. GLORIA DEHAVEN (1925-2016) was a band vocalist in film musicals such as Best Foot Forward (1943) and Summer Holiday (1948). She gradually moved into acting, emerging as a star in Summer Stock(1950) andThe Doctor and the Girl(1949).These films appeared set to rocket her to stardom: she could sing and she could act, making her a great fit for any role. However, she gradually turned to television in the 1950s, making guest appearances on many different shows. When the popularity of film musicals waned, DeHaven remained active as a nightclub and summer stock performer and made television appearances for decades, most prominently inMary Hartman, Mary Hartman(1976-1977) and the short-lived Nakia (1974). She re-entered the feature film industry in Out to Sea (1997) nearly 50 years later, starring opposite Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. Originally a casting director on films like Les Miserables (1935) and One in a Million (1936), LEW SCHREIBER (1900-1961) worked his way up to studio manager of  the Los Angeles Twentieth Century Fox, becoming the second-hand man of the motion picture company. He was often in charge of contacting the superstars of the company to inform them of production details or company standards. His death in 1961 was one in a long line of hardships Twentieth Century Fox suffered between 1961 and 1962; Another was the death of producer Jerry Wald, and yet another the stroke of producer Darryl Zanuck. Ink notes (unknown hand) at lower left margin. Stamp on verso touches six lines of printed text and signature of representative. Otherwise, fine condition.
