GLORIA DICKSON
Extremely rare signature of the emerging star, which died in a house
fire at age 28
Autograph Note signed: "Most Sincerely/To Elsie/Gloria Dickson",
6x4½ album leaf. GLORIA DICKSON (1917-1945) seemed headed for stardom
when she made her first Warner Bros. film, They Won't Forget, in
1937. Her life on and off screen, including three brief marriages, were
followed closely by the entertainment press, and she made several magazine
covers. In 1943, in her next to last film, Crime Doctor's Strange
Cases, she played the wife of a man who was constantly setting fires by
failing to douse his cigarettes. In 1945, she died in a fire in her Los Angeles
home, started by a burning cigarette. Harry Carp, who employed the stage
name of Myrus, was a renowned "mentalist" with a remarkable gift for
answering questions posed by members of the audience. His wife, Melba
Merriam, who went by Elsie Myrus when acting as his assistant, collected
autographs from celebrities attending his performances. This rare autograph
was part of her collection. Binding holes at left edge. Lightly toned around
edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
