A very rare signature from the celebrated black comedian
Signed: "Godfrey/Cambridge", in blue ink, 5x3. Godfrey Cambridge (1933-1976) was a celebrated black comedian, often ranked among fellow comedians Bill Cosby and Nipsey Rusell. Born to immigrants from British Guiana, Russell was sent to be educated in Nova Scotia during his school years, returning to New York when he was 13. Originally intending to study medicine, Cambridge dropped out after 3 years to pursue acting, working odd jobs to support himself. His career began to pick up in the late 1950's, appearing on Broadway and television. His role in the 1961 play Purlie Victorious earned him a Tony nomination, though his career in film was more successful, with notable films including Watermelon Man (1970), The President's Analyst (1967), and Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970). His stand up career is what he is most remembered for, recording a number of popular comedy albums. Unfortunately, Cambridge's career ended early after suffering from a heart attack while on the set of the ABC movie Victory at Entebbe (1976). Corners lightly worn. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Slightly soiled. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
