In 1939, the epic film, Gone With The Wind, based on Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel of the same name, broke box office records and won ten Oscars (against stiff competition). The saga of the old South remains one of the most beloved films of all time. Thomas Mitchell (1892-1962), a successful playwright and Broadway actor, had a stellar film year in 1939, appearing in five classic movies: Gone with the Wind, Stagecoach (for which he won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor), Only Angels Have Wings (the name ultimately given to the "Plane No. 4" project), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The Oscar (and a subsequent Tony and Emmy) notwithstanding, Mitchell is best remembered as Gerald O'Hara, the master of Tara. Two items.
