GOOD NEWS PLAY CAST
Six cast members sign the cover of the Playbill.
Show Bill signed: "Stubby/Kaye", "Paula/Cinko", "Gene Nelson", "Tommy Breslin", "Tim Cassidy", "Joe Burke", 34 pages, 5½x9. Playbill for a production of Good News at the St. James Theatre (New York), December 23, 1974 - January 4, 1975. This revival of the hit Broadway musical from 1927 ran only 16 performances, but brought back several Tin Pan Alley classics ("The Best Things in Life Are Free", "Keep Your Sunny Side Up", "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries"). Stars Stubby Kaye and Gene Nelson are pictured here, along with Alice Faye. (Paula Cinko was Faye's understudy.) STUBBY KAYE (1918-1997) is perhaps best known for his role as Nicely-Nicely Johnson in the 1950 Broadway hit, Guys and Dolls (a role he later reprised in the 1955 film version). Kaye, who was a winner in 1939 on Major Bowe's Amateur Hour radio, had spent most of WWII touring USO bases. Following his soaring popularity with Guys and Dolls, Kaye scored another Broadway-to-Hollywood triumph as Marryin' Sam in both the stage and screen versions of Li'l Abner (1959). He also appeared in such feature films as Sex and the Single Girl (1964), Cat Ballou (1965), Sweet Charity (1969) and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988, his last film role), and in was in a number of made-for-television movies, the last being The Big Knife (1988). GENE NELSON (1920-1996), an actor, director and screenwriter, appeared on both stage and screen. He earned a Tony Award nomination for Follies and won the Golden Globe as Most Promising Newcomer (1951) for his role in Tea for Two. In all, he appeared in some 25 plus films, the last being S.O.B. (1981). Nelson directed a number of films, including the Elvis Presley vehicles Kissin' Cousins (1963) and Harum Scarum (1965), and the TV series The Rifleman, The Donna Reed Show and Mod Squad. JOSEPH BURKE (b. 1945), a regional stage veteran, was making his only Broadway appearance, but appeared in two dozen TV series between 1975 and 1995 and many commercials, cast as Mr. Goodwrench and The Irish Spring Man. TOMMY BRESLIN (b. 1946) played supporting roles in 7 Broadway shows, mostly musicals, between 1969 and 1981. Actor and dancer TIM CASSIDY went on to play in the ensemble cast of the hit musicals A Chorus Line and Dreamgirls. PAULA CINKO (b. 195) had appeared Off-Broadway in A Quarter for the Ladies Room (1972). Lightly worn. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
