GOODMAN ACE
The comedian and writer leaves his signature, to which he has
jokingly added his wife Jane's mark ("X").
Autograph sentiment signed: "G. Ace/(X) [drawn arrow] Jane's mark/Sincerely,/Easy Aces",
4½ x 6 album leaf. Goodman Ace (1899-1982) hosted with his wife "Jane
Ace" a CBS radio comedy show, Easy Aces (1930-1945). The show
featured Goodman's droll humor and his wife's notorious malaprops. Jane's
mangled English usually made sense in a bizarre way. ("We are all cremated
equal.") When their show's radio success failed to translate to TV, Jane
retired, and Goodman Ace became a full-time comedy writer. He supplied
material to Milton Berle, Perry Como, Danny Kaye, Bob Newhart and Jack
Benny, among others. Benny reportedly sent him a $50 check with the comment,
"Your jokes got a lot of laughs. If you have any more, send them." Ace
replied, "Your check got a lot of laughs. If you have any more, send
them." Ace was TV critic for the Saturday Review, and had a
commentary on National Public Radio in the 1970s. Toned around edges. Horizontal
crease through center. Binding holes at upper edge, rounded corners at lower
edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
