GOPINATH KARTHA
His article, "Picture of Proteins by X-Ray Diffraction", which has been inscribed by the crystallographer to an admirer
Inscribed Article signed: "To/ Dr. H. G. Gilde/ with best complements from/ G Kartha" in blue ink, 11p, 6x8¾. Article titled "Picture of Proteins by X-Ray Diffraction" © 1968, first printed in Accounts of Chemical Research, a scholarly journal presenting critical articles in the areas of chemistry and biochemistry. Gopinath Kartha (1927-1984) was a crystallographer. In 1953, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Madras. He then began working in 1959 as part of the Protein Structure Project. Throughout the course of his career, Kartha authored or co-authored upwards of 80 scholarly publications all pertaining to structural crystallography. In 1967, he determined the molecular structure of the enzyme ribonuclease, making it the first protein structure elucidated and published in the United States. A member of Sigma XI, of the New York Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Science, Kartha's use of anomalous dispersion has proven instrumental in the solving of structures of proteins. Hans-Georg Gilde was a professor of chemistry who graduated from Ohio University. He taught at Marietta College from 1961 to 1992. The Hans Gilde Scholarship Fund is an award named in his honor given out by Marietta College. It is awarded to a stand-out organic chemistry student who has displayed exceptional leadership qualities.  Lightly toned. Corners and edges gently worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
