GORDON GRANT
Maritime painter Gordon Grant wrote this letter on letterhead of the American Artists Professional League to Art Digest in 1936. This letter accompanied a check for dues and a subscription.
Autograph letter signed "Gordon Grant". Pencil notations near top right corner in unknown hand. 1 page, 8¼x11, on letterhead of the American Artists Professional League. Jan. 8, 1936. Addressed to Art Digest, New York City. In full: "Dear Sirs The number of members who paid dues during December 1935 was seventy six .76 @ 1.25 $95. + 1 two year subscriber 2. = $97. Cheque for $97. enclosed Very truly yours". Grant was National Treasurer for this organization. Grant (1875-1962) was an American painter. He's probably best known for his maritime pictures, in particular of sailing ships. He was also one of many who lobbied to have the heavy frigate USS Constitution - "Old Ironsides" - be designated a national monument. In 1926, he offered prints of his painting of the USS Constitution to help raise money to preserve her; thousands were sold. Lightly toned and creased. Lightly discolored along top and right edges. Light dents and nick in top edge. Random ink stains. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
