GORE VIDAL
He signs the title page of his collection of essays, Rocking the
Boat.
Book Page signed: "Gore Vidal", 5½x8¼. Title page of the 1962
edition of his 1951 collection of essays, Rocking the Boat. Little, Brown
and Company, Boston & Toronto. Gore Vidal's (1925-2012) 22 novels include
Julian, Myra Breckinridge and the "American chronicles" series of
historical political novels. His work as a screenwriter includes
Ben-Hur and Visit to a Small Planet. He is also a playwright
and essayist. Vidal's outspoken left-wing politics, homosexuality and atheism
have made him a controversial figure. His series of ten, vitriolic debates with
conservative pundit William Buckley during the presidential nominating
conventions of 1968 are legendary. Vidal loved to ridicule American idols,
calling Theodore Roosevelt "an American sissy" and the Kennedys "the holy
family." Vidal observed: "There is not one human problem that could not be
solved if people would simply do as I advise." Slightly frayed left edge.
