GORG PISANI
The Maltese writer pens his name along with a sentiment in blue ink
Autograph Sentiment signed: “With beautiful desires/ Gorg Pisani/ [word(s) at lower left-hand
corner difficult to decipher]/ 5-2-'74”, in Maltese, translated in full, in blue ink, 3x1¾. Gorg
Pisani (1909-1999) was a Maltese writer whose work focused on the beauty and serenity
of the island of Gozo as well as its rich history. After graduating from the Lyceum Gozo,
Pisani joined the Capuchin Franciscan Friars as a novitiate, but eventually left the order to
first work as a teacher, and then as a government translator and co-editor of the Bulletin
of the Maltese Information Service in Valletta. While he was completing advanced studies
in literature and theology, he began writing poetry with the encouragement of Gozoan
novelist and poet Luigi Vella. In 1945, his compilation The Easter of Youth was
published. Pisani went on to write myriad poems, producing four collections of poetry in all.
In addition to his impressive poetic output, Pisani published many novels and short stories,
a few of which include Carol Spring (1947), Lighting and Rainbow (1976), and Apoteosi
(1978). Lightly toned. Ink markings on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
