The former Governor of Kansas and US Presidential candidate signs his
name in pencil
Signature: "Alf Landon" in pencil, 4½x3, with 1¾x2½ newspaper
photo affixed at top edge at left and over signature. Photo lifts to reveal full
signature and note (unknown hand). Alfred M. Landon (1887-1987),
Governor of Kansas from 1933-1937, was the 1936 Republican candidate for
President, losing in a landslide to President Franklin Roosevelt by 523-8
electoral votes, carrying only Maine and Vermont. Landon, who made his
fortune in the oil industry, was a moderate Republican who declined FDR's
offer of a post in his Cabinet because Roosevelt wouldn't decline to seek a
third term. His daughter, Nancy Landon Kassebaum, represented Kansas in the
U.S. Senate for three terms (1979-1997). ¼" strip of cloth binding at left edge.
