ALF LANDON
His signature on a circular piece of pink fabric, signed shortly after his landslide defeat in the Presidential election of 1936
Ephemera signed: "Alf M. Landon/March 1st 1937/Topeka, Kans.". Signed in black ink on a 5"-diameter circle of pink cloth with white stitching around outside edge. This fabric was originally intended for a patchwork quilt. Alfred M. Landon (1887-1987), Governor of Kansas from 1933-1937, was the 1936 Republican candidate for President, losing in a landslide to President Franklin Roosevelt by 523-8 electoral votes, carrying only Maine and Vermont. Landon, who made his fortune in the oil industry, was a moderate Republican who declined FDR's offer of a post in his Cabinet because Roosevelt wouldn't decline to seek a third term. His daughter, Nancy Landon Kassebaum, represented Kansas in the U.S. Senate for three terms (1979-1997). When Landon signed this unusual piece, he had just returned to private life, having lost the Presidential election in November, and concluded his term as Governor on January 11, 1937. Stray ink marks at edge above signature. Slight bleeding of ink at "Topeka, Ka". Otherwise, fine condition.
