Autograph letter signed: "A.B. Cornell" in black ink. 1 page,
5½x8¼. February 5, 1887. New York City, New York. Written on Horace L. Hotchkiss
& Co. Commission Stock Brokers letterhead. Addressed to J.S. Lehmaier, Esq.,
New York Republican leader. In full: "My dear Sir: Only now has it
become possible for me to determine positively that I could be present, and I
enclose acceptance which I trust is not too late. Yours very truly".
Alonzo B. Cornell (1832-1904), the eldest son of Ezra Cornell, founder of
Cornell University, first came to prominence when he was appointed Surveyor
of the Port of New York by President Grant in 1868, from which he became
extremely influential in New York politics, serving as chairman of the state
Republican Party and was elected Speaker of the State Assembly in 1873.
However, after a civil service scandal was uncovered in the N.Y. Custom House in
1878, President Hayes removed Chester A. Arthur and Alonzo B. Cornell
(1832-1904) from their offices. Two years later, Arthur was elected
Garfield's Vice President and Cornell became Governor of New York
(1880-1882). Binding holes in left margin. Normal mailing folds. Toned.
Small stains throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
