BRUCE BABBITT
The United States politician from Arizona signed this cover of The New Republic
Magazine signed: "Bruce Babbitt", 43 p, 8¼x11. "New Republic" magazine, May 27, 1985,
signed on the cover. Color illustration of Babbitt. Lead article by Fred Barnes: "Bruce
Babbitt, Sunbelt Democrat". Bruce Babbitt (b. 1938) began his political career as Attorney
General for the state of Arizona, an elected position he held from 1975 to 1978. Due to the
death of Governor Wesley Bolin, Babbitt was named Governor. He was elected to a second
term, allowing him to serve the state until 1987. In a surprising decision during his
governorship, Babbitt declined to run for the United States Senate against eventual
winner John McCain. He announced his plan to run for the Oval Office in 1988, a
campaign that withered that year. In 1993, Babbitt was tapped by newly elected President
Bill Clinton to serve as the Secretary of the Interior. He held the position for the entirety of
Clinton's tenure. In 2005, the former politician wrote a book, called Cities in the Wilderness:
A New Vision of Land Use in America, that proposes a new strategy to conserve our
ecosystems. Mailing label in lower left. Otherwise, fine condition.
