BUFORD ELLINGTON
The U.S. politician who served as Governor of Tennessee signs this black and white
photo
Photograph signed: "Best Wishes/Buford Ellington", in black felt tip, b/w, 8x10. Earl Buford
Ellington (1907-1972) served two nonconsecutive terms as Governor of Tennessee
(1959-1963, 1967-1971). He was floor manager for presidential candidate Lyndon
Johnson at the 1960 Democratic Convention, remaining a strong ally of LBJ when the
latter achieved the Presidency. The contrast in Ellington's two terms reflected a changing of
attitudes in the South. Running for his first term, he called himself "an old-fashioned
segregationist." On the campaign trail eight years later, he declared that it was time to “bury
the word and practice of segregation.” Fine condition.
