GOVERNOR CHARLES C. STEVENSON - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 02/02/1887 - HFSID 13780
Price: $300.00
CHARLES C. STEVENSON. TLS: "Charles C. Stevenson" as
Governor of Nevada, 1¾p, 8x10, separate lined sheets. Carson City,
Nevada, 1887 February 2. On official "Executive Department./Governor's
Office" letterhead to James S. Lehmaier, Esq., Member Committee of Arrangements
for the First Annual Dinner of the Republican Club of New York, New York, N.Y.
Begins: "Dear Sir". In full: "Your esteemed favor of
21st ult., extending to me a cordial invitation to attend the 'First Annual
Dinner of the Republican Club of New York,' on the 12th instant, was duly
received, for which please accept, and tender to your Club, my sincere thanks.
Our Legislature is now in regular session, and will not adjourn, finally,
until the 3rd proximo. This fact precludes the possibility of my acceptance and
attendance at the time and place indicated; and will, therefore, deprive me
of an unspeakable pleasure. The occasion will take place upon a day-the
Anniversary of the birth of our Country's Savior-which ought ever to be sacred
in the memory and observance of every true American; and I am led to believe
that none can or will more properly appreciate and celebrate it than members of
the glorious Republican party, to whose cause Mr. Lincoln devoted the best
energies of his life, and fell a glory-crowned martyr. I deeply regret my
inability to attend, and to mingle with the illustrious personages you name, as
well as many others, who will grace and give zest to the occasion. Wishing your
organization success, and a joyous reunion, I have the honor to be, Your
obedient servant". Charles Clark Stevenson (1826-1890) was the Republican
Governor of Nevada from 1887-1890. He was the brother of Edward Augustus
Stevenson (1831-1995), who served as Governor of the Idaho Territory
from 1885-1889 and was an unsuccessful candidate for Idaho's first governorship.
