Signature: "Charles Edison" in black ink. 5x3. Politician Charles Edison (1890-1969) is the fifth child of famed inventor Thomas Edison and his second wife Mina Miller. After an early career in theatre, he began working for his father in the late 1910s, for years running Edison Records and eventually becoming president of Thomas A. Edison, Inc. in 1927 until its sale in 1957 to the McGraw Electric Company. In 1937, Edison was appointed to President Franklin Roosevelt's cabinet as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, later becoming Secretary although only for a few months, instead opting to focus on his gubernatorial campaign. He was elected Governor of New Jersey in 1940 as a Democrat, and helped put in motion a proposal to update the state's constitution. After his retirement from office, he created a charitable foundation now called the Charles Edison Fund, and was one of the founders of the Conservative Party of New York State. Toned. Corners and edges slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
