Typed Letter signed: "Charles S. Whitman", 1 page, 5¾x9. New York, N.Y., 1903 December 24. On letterhead of the Office of the Mayor to Lucian Bonheur, New York City. In full: "Many thanks for your kind note of congratulations, just received. I appreciate your kindness in writing me. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, I am, Most Cordially yours". Charles Seymour Whitman (1868-1947) was a New York municipal judge and then New York County Prosecutor before being elected Governor of New York (1915-1918). Whitman gained national attention for prosecuting police lieutenant Charles Becker, who had murdered a gambling kingpin. Then, as Governor, Whitman signed Becker's death warrant and presided at his electrocution. A Republican, Whitman lost his bid for a third term to Al Smith, the Democratic Party's presidential nominee in 1928. Christine Todd Whitman, the wife of Charles Whitman's grandson, became Governor of New Jersey and Administration of the EPA. Normal mailing folds.
