The Governor of Delaware signed this card in black felt tip pen
Signature: “Charles Terry” on a 3½x2 card. Charles Terry (1900-1970) was a Delaware
lawyer, judge, and one-term Governor. His government career largely consists of his record
as a justice, first as an Associate Justice on the state's Superior Court (1938-1957), second as
the President Judge in the same court (1957-1962), then as an Associate Justice (1962-1963)
and Chief Justice (1963-1964) on the Delaware Supreme Court. He resigned as Chief Justice
and was elected to be Governor in 1964, where he served until 1969. As Governor, Terry
reformed the Delaware judicial system and founded the Delaware Technical Community
College. His tenure was brought to an end as a result of his inability to end the violence
that plagued Wilmington, Delaware as a result of repeated racial violence, first in reaction
to the failure to pass equal housing legislation, and second to Martin Luther King Jr.'s
assassination in 1968. Name in pencil in unknown hand on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
