GOVERNOR DAVID C. TREEN - AUTOGRAPH - HFSID 71515
Price: $70.00
GOVERNOR DAVID C. TREEN
Signature by the U. S. Representative and Governor from
Louisiana
Signature: "David C. Treen/Louisiana". 3¼x2 card. David C.
Treen (1928-2009) was U. S. Representative from Louisiana's 3rd District
(1973-1980) as well as Louisiana's first Republican governor since
Reconstruction (1980-1984). His term as governor saw the appointment of
more blacks to office than in any previous election and the creation of the
Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts and the state Department of
Environmental Quality. Treen's political career could be characterized by the
saying, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." And he had tried,
unsuccessfully, to unseat Democrat Hale Boggs from Louisiana's 2nd Congressional
District seat three times in the 1960s - this at a time when the number of
registered Republicans in Louisiana was miniscule. He also had an unsuccessful
run for Governor in 1972 and as 1960 presidential nominee for the Louisiana
States' Rights Party. Lightly toned. Paper clip impression at top edge. Random
ink stains on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
