Clinton acknowledges "receipt of several letters from you giving me information of the political State of the Eastern & Western Districts and I now most cordially reciprocate your congratulations on the auspicious result of the late election - on the triumph of republicanism over faction Federalism...." Five years later, DeWitt Clinton was the unsuccessful Federalist candidate for President. He served as U.S. Senator (1802-1803), Mayor of New York City (1803-1807, 1810, 1811, 1813, 1814) and Governor of New York (1817-1821, 1825-1828). Fragile, worn and creased. Nicked edges. Folds, none touch signature. Pencil notes at upper right corner (unknown hand). Lightly stained.
