DeWITT CLINTON. Civil Appointment signed: "DeWitt Clinton" as Governor, 1p, 15½x9¾. Albany, New York, 1822 March 21. Partly printed document appointing Thomas Howland and Russell Burt of Northumberland as Justices of the Peace for Saratoga County. Also signed by the New York Secretary of State "J. V. N. Yates". Imprinted at lower left with state seal. From 1802-1803, DeWITT CLINTON was U.S. Senator, resigning to become Mayor of New York (1803-1807, 1808-1810 and 1811-1815). The son of Revolutionary War General James Clinton, DeWitt had been introduced to politics when he served as secretary to his uncle, New York's first Governor, George Clinton. In 1812, DeWitt Clinton was the unsuccessful Federalist candidate for President, losing in a close election to Democratic-Republican incumbent, James Madison by 128-89 electoral votes, 11-seven states.
