During the War of 1812, on the day before the British bombarded Fort McHenry and Francis Scott Key wrote the "Star Spangled Banner," Mayor Clinton orders the City Treasurer to "Pay Holden & Lawrence Four hundred and twenty four 25/100 Dollars, for City watch." Clinton had been the unsuccessful Federalist nominee for President against Madison in 1812. Light show-through from "Asa Holden" endorsement on verso. Fine condition.
