DE WITT CLINTON. Partly Printed DS: "De Witt Clinton" as Mayor of New York City, 1p, 7x4½. New York, 1813 November 29. In full: "To the Treasurer of the City of New York, Pay Christian Shultz Two hundred fifty Dollars, for 1 Q[uarte]r Sal[a]ry to 26 Nov. By order of Common Council." ADS: "C Shultz" on verso indicating he received the $250. From 1802-1803, De Witt Clinton (1769-1828) was U.S. Senator, resigning to become Mayor of New York (1803-1807, 1808-1810 and 1811-1815). The son of Revolutionary War General James Clinton, De Witt had been introduced to politics when he served as secretary to his uncle, New York's first Governor, George Clinton. In 1812, De Witt Clinton was the unsuccessful Federalist candidate for President, losing in a close election to Democratic-Republican incumbent James Madison. De Witt Clinton served as Governor of New York from 1817-1821 and 1825 until his death in 1828 and is known as the "Father of the Erie Canal". Cut "x" bank cancellations touching but not affecting writing. Light horizontal fold touches signature. Fine condition.
