Huddleston Greeting: We, reposing especial trust and confidence, as well in your patriotism, conduct and loyalty, as in your integrity and readiness to do us good and faithful service, Have appointed and constituted, and by these Presents Do appoint and constitute you the said George W. Huddleston Surgeons Mate of the 45th Regiment of Infantry of our said State...." JOHN VAN NESS YATES served as Secretary of State (1818-1826) and published various legal pamphlets. DeWITT CLINTON, Governor of New York from 1817-1821 and 1825-1828, had been secretary to his uncle, New York's first Governor, George Clinton (1790-1795). He was also U.S. Senator from New York (1802-1803), Mayor of New York City (1803-1807, 1808-1810, 1811-1815) and unsuccessful Peace Party candidate for President in 1812 against Madison. Democrat DeWitt Clinton was the only Clinton ever elected to the U.S. Senate (representing New York from February 9, 1802 to November 4, 1803, resigning to become Mayor of New York City) until First Lady Hillary Clinton won her bid in the November 2000 election. Vertical folds (not touching signature). ½-inch separation at bottom blank left vertical fold and blank mid-vertical fold. Light ink transference from being folded. Overall, fine condition.
