DOLPH BRISCOE
On official gubernatorial letterhead, The Texas Governor sends a letter to a school teacher.
Typed Letter Signed: "Dolph Briscoe" as Governor of Texas, ¾p, 7¼x10½. Austin, Texas, 1975 February 12. On "State of Texas/Office of the Governor" letterhead to Mr. J.L. Pruett, Principal, Department of Education, Richwood-Clute, Texas. In full: "Thank you for your letter of February 5. I am happy to honor your request for my signature and am returning the invitation [not present] herewith. I appreciate your kind letter and thank you again for writing." Democrat Dolph Briscoe, Jr. (1923-2010) served as Governor of Texas from 1973-1979. Briscoe, a veteran of WWII, had previously served in the Texas state legislature (1949-1957) and was a prominent Texas landowner, businessman and philanthropist. During his tenure as the state's 40th Governor, Briscoe made good on his promise not to raise taxes, but passed legislation for the paving of 41,000 miles of farm and ranch roads to enable farmers and ranchers to bring their produce and stock to market. His administration was also known for its fair dealing, and Briscoe was a staunch supporter of open government, resulting in the passage of what is today the Public Information Act. Unknown signature at lower margin. Lightly creased. Paper clip impression at upper blank margin, lightly soiled at lower margin. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
