Johnson” in green and blue ink. 7¼x10½. Written on official State of Colorado letterhead.
Place: Denver, Colorado. Date: July 19, 1955. Addressed to: Mr. Bill Geiger, 210 Terrace
Drive, Waterloo, Iowa. In full: “Dear Bill: I am happy to send you the autographs of Mrs.
Johnson and myself and wish to congratulate you upon having such a fine hobby as a
collector. Sincerely yours, Ed Johnson. ECJ/eb. Enclosures”. Autographs of Edwin C. Johnson
and Ferne Claire Johnson affixed in two 3½x2 cards. EDWIN CARL JOHNSON
(1884-1970) was a Democratic U.S. Senator from Colorado (1937-1955). His speech on
the Senate floor criticizing the extra-marital affair of actress Ingrid Bergman with Italian
director Roberto Rossellini created a furor, causing the actress to flee to Europe before
returning in the 1956 film, Anastasia. Johnson also served as Lieutenant Governor
(1931-1933) and Governor of Colorado (1933-1937 and 1955-1957). FERNE CLAIRE
JOHNSON (1885-1971) was the First Lady of Colorado from1933-1937 and 1955-1957
due to his marriage with Edwin Carl Johnson. Lightly toned and creased. Adhesive residue on
verso. Normal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
