Typed Letter signed: "Ed C. Johnson", as US Senator,8x10½ page, affixed at an 8½x11 page (2 surfaces). Washington, D.C., 1945 July 31. On letterhead of the Committee on Military Affairs to Ralph Errington Ward, Washington, D.C. In full: "I am pleased to send my autograph to add to your collection. Most sincerely". Accompanied by transmittal envelope with Johnson's stamped frank. Newspaper photo of him affixed to envelope. Edwin C. Johnson (1884-1970) is best known as a Democratic U.S. Senator from Colorado (1937-1955). His speech on the Senate floor criticizing the extra-marital affair of actress Ingrid Bergman (whom he called "an apostle of degradation") with Italian director Roberto Rossellini created a furor, causing the actress to flee to Europe before returning in the 1956 film, Anastasia. Johnson also served as Lieutenant Governor (1931-1933) and Governor of Colorado (1933-1937 and 1955-1957). From the collection Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward became President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned at edges. Lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
