Typed Letter signed: "Edwin Edwards" as Governor, 1 page, 8x10.
Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 1979 July 19. On official letterhead to Paul
Friscot, North Canton, Ohio. In full: "Thank you so much for your
recent letter. I am pleased to honor your request and have enclosed an
autographed picture plus several brochures containing information about
Louisiana. [Items not included.] 'Don't criticize another person until
you've walked a mile in his moccasins' is one of my favorite sayings and I'm
sure you can appreciate its meaning. If I can be of further assistance, please
feel free to contact my office again. Kindest personal regards. Cordially".
In the tradition of colorful Louisiana politicians, Edwin Edwards served
in the US House of Representatives (1965-1972) before beginning the first of his
four nonconsecutive terms as Governor (1972-1980, 1984-1988, 1992-1996). He
also served on the state's Supreme Court (1980). Edwards was indicted three
times on federal racketeering charges, resulting in a hung jury, an acquittal
and - finally - in 2000, a conviction on charges of accepting bribes for
casino licenses. In 2001, he began serving a 10-year prison sentence.
