Signature: "Ernest W. McFarland" in blue ink, 6½x2¼. Affixed to an 8½x11 page which also bears a U.S. Senate envelope with his stamped frank (3 surfaces). ERNEST W. McFARLAND (1894-1984), a Democrat from Arizona, was a U.S. senator (1941-1953), was a governor (1955-1959), and also served as Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court (1968). He has been called "father of the GI Bill," having first proposed the legislation which passed Congress unanimously in 1944. He was Senate Majority Leader (1951-1953), but was defeated for re-election by Barry Goldwater in 1952. He lost a rematch against Goldwater in 1958. From the collection Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward became President and CEO of Chesebrough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Edges irregularly cut. Adhesive on verso (affixing the piece to both the page and the envelope). Two vertical folds (slightly affecting signature). Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
